Our PRoduction model

PASTURE-BASED

As farmers, we look to creation and do our best to see that every animal is permitted to express itself to the fullest.  Our cows graze, our pigs root, and our chickens scratch and peck in green pastures.

Pastured livestock and poultry, moved frequently to new "salad bars," offer landscape healing and nutritional superiority.  Our aim is to use the Polyface 3M's model of farming.  1st M: Mobile.  We want mobile production equipment.  This means during spring, summer, and fall we move our cows, chickens, and pigs to new paddocks.  We do not want any of our animals to stay in the same pasture year round.  Instead, we use electric fences to simulate herbivore movement in nature. Our mobile equipment does not stay in one place.  Our chicken coops are built on wheels and follow our cows to sanitize our pastures and bring nutrients back into the soil.  Our broiler houses (coming in the spring) will be built on wheels and moved to new grass daily.  2nd M: Modular.  We want our equipment and infrastructure to serve multiple purpose.  For example we want to use our cows to create our compost by staying in the barn during winter months.  The composting material keeps our cows warm and comfortable during the coldest months.  3rd M: Management Intensive.  Our model of farming requires constant animal and soil management.  We are involved in every aspect of our animal production life cycle.  This means daily movement, constant care, and a lot of hard work.
